Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T'This company offers various services to UK hauliers in other countries and to foreign hauliers in the UK. It is our view that hauliers are treated unfairly throughout Europe and need to do very little in order to bring the heavy hand of the authorities down on them.

I read in CM (26 Nov-2 Dec) that 50% of foreign hauliers checked had their vehicles prohibited, the suggestion being that foreign hauliers were in some way worse offenders than those in the UK.

The fact is that many of those prohibitions were prob

ably issued under the Road Traffic (Foreign Vehicles) Act 1972. Prohibitions under this legislation are not issued to UK vehicles and I believe that this makes any comparison unfair.

This is clearly discriminatory and contrary to the Treaty of Rome. It is unfortunately used far too often. There are similar regulations in other European countries which discriminate against "foreign drivers"; often these will be from the UK.

This company strives to have drivers of all nationalities treated in the same manner as the residents of whatever country they drive in: only in this way will they receive fair treatment.

Your sthry, small as it was, does nothing to help drivers but merely reinforces often incorrect views.
