A SHEFFIELD-BASED bakery is putting 30 drivers on a special training course in preparation for a new European Union directive.
The Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQs) in driving goods vehicles covers everything from technical knowledge about trucks to regulations surrounding haulage.
Fletchers Bakeries put its drivers on the course because a new EU training directive is expected to come into force in 2007.
The Freight Transport Associa tion says that although the directive is still only at the consultative stage, NVQs seem to be the most likely way of meeting its requirements.
The course is being funded by the Learning & Skills Council in South Yorkshire and is being run by HGV training specialist TAL Training of Sheffield.
Hakim Wais, managing director of TAL, says the course takes about 30 hours to complete but that most of the training is done on the job.
