HAVING JUST read your article ‘Reading the manual’ (CM 27 January), which compares auto and manual gearboxes, I must say I disagree with auto being branded as better.
I have been driving lorries for more than 20 years, and I now have the displeasure of driving a DAF XF105 with an auto-box, and for me auto is not favourable. In my opinion, I think that with the auto-box and cruise control, drivers are made to concentrate less on their actual driving skills, because all we do is ‘point and steer’; this cannot be a good thing.
A good driver can achieve just as good fuel igures with a manual gearbox as with an auto.
I may be old fashioned, but I was taught to drive – and not to point and steer.
