THE MacRobert Award for engineering has been won by a team ol five men from the Johnson Matthey Group for the development of catalytic systems for controlling exhaust pollution.
The Award, made annually, is presented in recognition of an outstanding contribution to innovation in the field of engineering, the physical technologies, or in the application of the physical sciences.
The Johnson Matthey Group researched and developed to production platinum metal catalysts on light ceramic honeycomb supports to meet the industry's requirements for a system capable of low-temperature operation.
Production of the system began in 1974 and to date some ten million catalyst units have been supplied throughout the world.
