THE SECOND EDITION of Heavy Vehicle Technology (Hutchinson £12) is not the weighty manual that the title implies. It is instead a textbook, written to comply with the new City and Guilds of London Institute syllabus, by two senior lecturers in automobile engineering.
Although primarily aimed at the technical student, it is equally applicable to anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of how and why the modern road transport vehicle is built the way it is.
Each of the nine chapters set out to define the function, operation and alternatives for a single major component. Without delving too deep into the theoretical aspects the text is supplemented by more than 400 illustrations which help to give a clear understanding of the workings of the modern commercial vehicle.
