• Vauxhall will launch a new Astra hatchback at this September's Frankfurt Show, probably followed by van ver sions of this and the MPV derivative, the Zafira.
The Zafira uses the floorpan, engine and other running gear of the hatchback but has a different body offering much more interior space. The MPV version with the rear seats removed can carry up to 1,705 litres of luggage and has a maximum load length of 2.8m. will be a 1.6-litre petrol 99hp petrol and a 2.0-litre 81hp direct-injection diesel.
The van version would be in direct competition with Citroen/Peugeot's Berlingo/Partner; Ford is also likely to have a contender based on the new Escort which will appear in 1999.
Vauxhall has already announced its intention to be a major player in the LCIT market—two new CDVs would help it compete with the likes of Ford, Peugeot and Citroen.
