AI unusual experiment is to start very shortly in Yorkshire, where Reliance Motor Services Ltd. have closed their stage carriage service between York and Helmsley after 38 years, and are running a shortened route from the city to Brandsby in the North Riding, 19 miles distant, and about halfway along the full former route.
With the backing of Helmsley Rural District Council—moral, not financial— a 24-year old Ampleforth (N. Yorks) motoring school proprietor, Mr. David Gray, was granted a special short-term licence by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners to operate a mini-bus between Helmsley and Brandsby to link up with certain Reliance Services to and from York.
This short-term licence will operate from two months to 10 weeks, when a full-scale hearing about the York-Helmsley route will then be taken by the Commissioners. Mr. Gray said fares on his section would have to be slightly higher than those formerly charged by Reliance, in order to cover his operating costs.
On Saturdays only, he has also been granted two journeys direct from Helmsley right into York, with full restrictions on picking up and setting down at Brandsby and beyond, to protect Reliance interests.
