ARANGE of three-axle semi-trailers has been introduced by R. A. Dyson and Co. Ltd. and the standard platform model, when operated at 32 tons g.t.w., offers a gain of 35 cwt. in payload compared with an equivalent 30-ton-gross tandem-axle type.
The Dyson flat semi-trailers for 22/23 tons payload are available with platform lengths from 31 ft. to 34 ft., while the three-axle running gear is being offered in unit form as a complete, brake-equipped bogie for mounting tanks, integral vans and other forms of body.
The accompanying drawing shows the layout of a typical Dyson three-axle semi-trailer, from which it will be seen that the leaf-spring axles have interconnected slipper-ended semielliptical springs and trailing rubber-bushed radius rods. Single 10.00-20 16-ply tyres are fitted and all three axles have 15.5 in x 6 in. cam brakes with individual diaphragm brake chambers and slack adjusters. A handwheeloperated parking brake operates on two axles.
Dyson state that the standard version with 32 ft. 6 in. by 8 ft. platform body weighs about 4 tons 15 cwt.—or only 5 cwt. more than a normal tandem-axle type on 10.00-20 I4-ply twins, limited to 30 tons gross with the same two-axle tractive unit that can run at 32 with the tri-axle.
York and Crane Fruehauf are other British companies offering three-axle semi trailers designed to operate at the new 32 tons gross weight-limit.
