• Safety chiefs have launched new codes of practice laying down design standards for road tankers carrying dangerous chemicals. The regulations come into force from July 1.
Hoover hoot
• Drivers have been hooting encouragement to a blue Ford Cargo belonging to David Dixon, the Cumbriabased carriage builder who was impounding a Hoover van for a second week in protest at Hoover's delay in supplying two free flights.
Cell cash
• A skip lorry driver has been awarded £800 compensation after being arrested and locked in police cells for more than two hours. While George Devlin was found guilty of carrying an insecure load, police claim he was arrested for being abusive to an officer. These claims were unsubstantiated at a compensation hearing.
Lane limits
M Lane restrictions for heavy goods vehicles will come into force from next Tuesday during a two-month repair contract on the M3 between junctions eight and nine in Hampshire.
Nifty shifter
• Britannia Trucks is showing the Stone Bennett electronic gearshifter for Allison auto-gearboxes at next week's Waste Management show at Torbay. The two-button system reduces transmission shocks and removes stresses from the selection mechanisms.
Fewer fail
• The number of hauliers which have gone into receivership this year is down to 31 so far compared with 43 last year, say figures compiled by accountant Touche Ross.
