IIII The level of law breaking among operators of light goods vehicles was highlighted last week when Vehicle Inspectorate officials handed out nearly 500 prohibitions during a national series of roadside check.
The checks were part of the third Operation Mermaid this year devoted to light goods vehicles and 4x4s. Examiners looked at 1,582 vehicles.
Immediate prohibitions were handed out to 206 vehicles for mechanical defects, while 211 received delayed prohibitions.
VI business performance director Bob Tatchell says that once again, brake and tyre defects were the most common cause of prohibitions.
Traffic examiners checked 1,473 vehicles, of which 239 were referred for further investigation. Of the 343 UK vehicles weighed, 42 received prohibitions for overloading.
III The VI is meeting European traffic examiners this week as part of a European enforcement harmonisation programme.
Traffic examiners from France, Belgium, Holland and Ireland will learn more about UK enforcement practices: VI traffic examiners will be making a return trip to France and Belgium in the autumn.
