NiToRE than 90 elderly people crammed 1V1 into Eastbourne Town Council Chamber last Friday to support a coach operator's application to the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners for licences to run coach parties on five routes for people aged over 55.
After 14 people had given evidence, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed in June, when arguments by a dozen objecting bus and coach companies, including Southdown Motor Services Ltd., will be heard.
Mr. A. S. Dowding, one of four directors of Eastbourne Coachways Ltd., said he had been frequently asked if he could take parties of elderly people on coach holidays.
He applied for five routes: Torquay (£12); Ilfracombe (£12 10s.); Kendal (£13 las.); Morecambe (£12 5s.) and Edinburgh (£15 10s.) and added that these figures included a weck's hotel accommodation and other excursions.
He wanted five picking-up points: at Eastbourne Central Coach Station, Polegate, Hailsham, Pevensey and Stone Cross.
