IN a second case before the Tribunal on Tuesday, Gavin Wilkie, of Glasgow, failed in an appeal against the Scottish Licensing Authority's grant of a B licence for one low-loader of 13 tons to Watson Plant Hiring Co. Ltd. over a radius of 25 miles.
For Gavin Wilkie, Mr. R. Mackenzie. contended that the application came at a time when building work was falling away, and that it was an offence to enter the haulage field.
Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for Watson, said that the Licensing Authority had acted wisely in the public interest in granting this licence.
Mr. G. D. Squibb, president of the Tribunal, said it was in the public interest that special vehicles such as these lowleaders should be used to the maximum extent and it was better that such a vehicle should be carrying a full load rather than travelling on the roads light. He said that this was the kind of case for which a B licence was designed. There was certain spare capacity and that could be employed if a B was granted; the Licensing Authority had been correct in his decision, said Mr. Squibb, and dismissed the appeal.
