• Ford is developing a high powered Cargo tractive unit for operation at 38 tonnes.
Since early 1985, it has offered the Cargo 3424 model powered by the turbocharged Cummins LTIO engine rated at 119kW (240hp) which, with a Rockwell U180E drive axle (first used on the discontinued Transcontinental tractive unit) is technically capable of 38tonne operation.
Ford has not pressed the point as it is widely considered to be underpowered by today's standards.
The latest vehicle under development, however, uses a charge-cooled version of the L10, which gives an installed power rating of 208kW (280hp) Five vehicles, running in fleets, are halfway through their evaluation programme due to end in October.
Ford has also added an extra 6x4 model to its Cargo rigid line-up (page 4).
