... Long Haul option for Middle East runs
by Graham Montgomerie For the almost non-existent roads to be found in some parts of the Middle East, a heavy-duty suspension is provided which includes 7.5 tonne front springs and 11.5 tonne rear springs and induction hardened track rod arms. Optional 460-litre (100gal) and 600-litre (132ga1) fuel tanks are also available as part of the long haul package.
• The Climatic package includes a roof-mounted Kysor KA 300 air conditioning unit which has sufficient capacity to pull down the in-cab temperature to 10°C (18°F) below ambient. As an alternative, a double crankshaft mounted pulley and a York compressor mounting are available so that other types of air conditioning unit can be fitted. An alternative to full air conditioning is an air vent in the floor on the driver's side fitted with a fine wire mesh to keep out insects. To keep the driver comfortable overnight in a cold climate a thermostatically controlled auxiliary heater is fitted which burns diesel from the main tank.
The Security pack provides locking facilities for all parts Which might be pilfered. A locking fuel cap is included, the oil filler cap and dipstick are fitted with a padlock and the cab tilt mechanism is also lockable.
Padlocks are also provided for the battery cover, fifthwheel release, tool box, reserve jerry cans, tow-bar and wheel chock carrier, with all these locks using the same key. Grille S are provided to protect the lights and an alarm is fitted which sounds when the cab doors are opened.
The Additional Stowage pack includes a frame-mounted tool box and three 20-litre (4.4gal) jerry-cans of water for the wash basin.
Although the features mentrolled are grouped into four main packages, most of them are available separately or in combination with another feature. As with all SVO items, the warranty of the trunk applies to the options as well.
The first example of a Transcontinental with the complete Long Haul package will be at Earls Court for the Show. This particular model has in fact already been sold fora cool £22,000.
