THE LATEST addition to the Contractor range of heavyhaulage specials is the 244-tonne (240-ton) gtw model announced today by Leyland Truck and Bus.

The 6x4 Contractor is fitted with a six-cylinder Cummins KT-450 engine developing 295kW (395bhp) at 2,100rpm and 1,642Nm (1,2111bft) maximum torque at 1,500rpm.

Drive is transmitted via an Allison torque converter and five-speed automatic gearbox. This is complemented by an auxiliary Spicer four-speed manual box placed behind the automatic to act as a rangechange ensuring the most efficient use of the torque converter.

Apart from the changes to the engine and drive-line, the 244-tonne Contractor shares the same basic specification as the other models.
