action on weights
THIS WEEK the Freight Transport Association wrote to Minister for Transport Fred Mulley to urge him to act soon on the weights issue. It has pointed out that a switch from 32 tons to 38 tonnes is vital in the light of the current economic and energy crisis.
The FTA gives three reasons: 1, costs would be cut by about 10 per cent per payload ton mile ; 2, there would be a fue consumption saving of up tc 15 per cent ; 3, the country': comparative position would IN improved because the per mitted axle weight is ahead: higher in Europe.
The FTA points out tha heavier lorries would not neces sarily be larger, noisier or emi more smoke than existing vehicles.
