• A south-east London haulier has been jailed for five years after defrauding the tax authorities of £800,000.
Southwark Crown Court last week imposed the sentence on Swanley-based Daniel Andrews, the owner of general haulier and tipper operator J&A Transport. Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise also obtained a confiscation and compensation order against Andrews totalling 2793,810. Vehicles worth £304,000 and other property will be seized, says the Inland Revenue. If Andrews defaults on the order, he will serve an extra four years in jail. The court also disqualified Andrews for seven years as a company director. Andrews had been in custody since his trial in December when he was found guilty of defrauding the public revenue by failing to deduct tax from payments to employees to the Inland Revenue. He was also found guilty of VAT fraud. The estimated tax loss was £500,000 income tax and national insurance and £300,000 VAT. The offences took place between June 1 991 and May 1994.
