D EAR flashing direction indicators and .11%. stop lights which have increased daytime visibility without being too bright at night were demonstrated in Detroit recently. Similar systems are known to be in the course of development in the U.K.
Daylight brightness in the new American system is two to four times higher than those in current use. When the headlights are switched on, however, the rear signal brightness is reduced to prevent uncomfortable and dangerous glare for following drivers.
It is anticipated that U.S. motor vehicle manufacturers will adopt the "dual intensity" system as soon as development work and production plans can be completed.
