riA NEW method of recruiting bus drivers is being used by the City of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd. It is thought that the Oxford company is the first in the country to attempt it.
The company offers applicants, who must have some driving experience, tuition in driving a bus with a view to obtaining a p.s.v. licence. Candidates, who learn in their spare time, pay nothing for the titition, but agree to join the company if they pass their test.
As a sign of good faith, they deposit £5, which is repaid when they join the company or if they fail to get a p.s.v. licence.
Successful drivers join the company on the same understanding as that which applies to conductors who wish to become drivers. They enter into a " bond " with the company, whereby a debt of £12 is paid off at the rate of £1 a month. so that if they leave before the end of their first year they are liable to pay up whatever remains outstanding on the debt.
