• Passengers using a bus between Runcorn, Helsby and Chester claimed that school bags and games kits were a source of "hardship". The claim was made in a summary of evidence to the North Western Area Transport Users' Consultative Committee from objectors to the proposal by British Railways to withdraw train services between these towns.
Bus passengers claimed there was only one bus — already used by some 30 passengers a day — which children had to catch to arrive at School on time. Other objectors urged that, in view of the population growth in the area, both tram and bus services should be improved rather than withdrawn or reduced.
Objections have come from 16 local authorities in the Cheshire area besides 49 individuals and other bodies. They will be heard at Chester on September 28. Crosville Motors Services have already said the cost of the children's train travel in most cases was borne by the education authority, with whom the company was prepared to co-operate in arranging alternative facilities.
