THE anomalous Norwegian system in which vehicle width is linked to different axle weight limits on the secondary road network is to give way later this year to a simplified formula allowing use of 2.5m-wide vehicles on all main roads. The present legislation which allows vehicle widths of 2.35. 2.40. 2.45. and 2.5m for operation on roads subject to 6-, 7-, 8and 10-ton limits has been severely criticized by Norwegian and foreign operators.
The new rules are also expected to abolish the requirement for a minimum road width of 6m for use by maximum width lorries. Regional authorities will be able to exercise their discretion in allowing operation of 2.5m-wide vehicles on an extended part of the road system. Most roads will continue to be subject to an 8-ton axle weight (12-ton bogie) although every effort will be made towards the introduction of a 10-ton limit.
