THE NUMBER of trucks stolen in the first half of 2005 fell 25% to 970 from 1,203 a year earlier, according to the latest statistics from TruckPol.
Of the 970 reported stolen vehicles, 252 were recovered: 15% within the first 24 hours. Truck Pot says the Metropolitan police area has the highest rate of HG V thefts at 10%, followed by Kent (7%), West Midlands (6%) and West Yorkshire (5%). All other forces had fewer than 50 vehicles stolen, equating to less than 5%.
DS Mark Hooper says the theft of HGVs remains an ongoing concern for police and industry alike. "Generally, road-freight crime does not fall within the control strategies of police forces. However, where operations have been mounted the response has been effective: Operation Mammoth in South Yorkshire managed to reduce the local and national threat.
"Others such as Operation indicate in the West Midlands, combined with directed patrols along the road networks, while maybe targeting criminals involved in load thefts, have no doubt led to increased levels of prevention."
