Our photographs show special features of the recent Maudslay delivery to the G.W.R. Co. Three of these machines were supplied, the specification calling for one or two modifications to the company's standard design. Noticeable features are the pressedsteel main frame side members and the channel-iron under-frame for supporting the engine, the gearbox being suspended off the main frame. This unit is disposed 3 ft. behind the rear of the standard chassis position, in order to shorten the length of propeller shaft.
The speed selecting box is seen in the light-hand illustration. The other view clearly shows the duplex brakes which are fitted to the rear road-wheels. The shoe brakes on the outer drums, which are 28 ins, in diameter, are operated by hand. The brake shoes are of the loco, type, each shoe being compensated and easily adjusted.
The foot brake takes effect on the inner drums, which are 18 ins, in diameter ; these are actuated by means of cams and internally-expanding shoes.
We also direct attention to the large-sized pedal plates fitted, and which are provided with side flanges. This is a feature which shows that the Nlaudslay people pay particular attention to the control so that certain risks are not present.
