ONDON TRANSPORT proposes to J--4 charge a flat fare higher than the ordinary maximum fare for the same journey when the first standee buses come into operation on a route between Victoria and Marble Arch next year. This was stated by Mr. Edgar Fay, representing London Transport, at the Transport wanted to see if those who wanted higher fares in the London area. Mr. Fay went on to say that London Transport wanted to see if those who wanted faster travel were prepared to stand all the way. He added that the experiment will he on the assumption that people would prefer speed to travelling in a slower bus in which other passengers were seated; presumably the new service will be limited or non-stop. Reference to the new standee buses was made in The Commercial Motor, July 3 and again on August 28. Initially there will be six, on A.E.C. Merlin rearunderfloor-engined chassis, with room for between 70 and 80 passengers. Seats will be provided for not more than one third of the passengers, and these will, it is underst000d, be at the rear. Ordinary buses will be retained on the experimental routes. Mr. Fay said. He added that the Board's receipts had dropped by £2,400,000 and costs increased by £6,000,000, and it faced a deficit of £2,700,000 unless the proposed fare increases were granted. Another .£2,000,000 had been earmarked for rises in pay and improvements in conditions under union agreements.
