We asked the members of our operators' panel to choose which laws they would like to scrap — and which they would introduce.
They came up with some innovative and
surprising suggestions. Pat Hagan reports.
Imagine your fairy godmother made you Transport Secretary for a day and, as is usual in such cases, the old girl threw in a couple of wishes. One of these wishes allowed you to introduce any new law that might benefit the haulage industry: the other empowered you to abolish any piece of legislation that is penalising your business.
But when push comes to shove, what would your choice be? It's a question that perplexed some members of CM's operators' panel as they looked forward to another year in the industry.
Enforcement of the WTD
Inevitably, the Working Time Directive was a popular choice. But most members of our panel would simply like to see the WTD policed more fairly rather than chucked on the scrap heap.
As for new laws, most opted for legislation to help their particular problems — whether clamping, vehicle size or debt recovery. Here's what they came up with. •
