Yeovil, Somerset Like the other panel members, Matthews is reluctant to come up with any more legislation for an industry already bogged down in bureaucracy. Instead, he says. resources should be ploughed into enforcing existing laws to punish rogue operators.
"The laws are already there; they're just not being used," he says. "Policing now is all about crime reduction and not enough attention is given to traffic offences. I'm in the scaffolding industry and every day I see scaffolding wagons that are overloaded."
And his choice for the scrap heap? Speed cameras: "I'd rather be stopped by a police officer who can use his discretion if I'm doing 40mph in a 30mph zone at 4am."
