It is 12 months since Daf dealership F&G Commercials opened its used truck operation. Steve Banner pops in to see how it has fared.
This month Daf dealership F&G Commercials celebrates the first anniversary of its Barnsley used truck operation.
Nigel Sharp. the man responsible for running it, says:-We struggled during the initial four months, hut then we got onto a bit of a roll. We've moved a lot of stuff since August."
He, too, has been hit by the nationwide shortage of late-plate vehicles —"we've only got three trucks in stock at present"— but the impact on F&G has been mitigated by Sharp's willingness to carry almost all makes.
Admittedly, vehicles without a Daf badge make up less than 10% of the Carlton Industrial Estate site's volume, but they widen Sharp's scope for buying and selling.
Tractor units up to three to four years old account for 70% of sales, and hauliers tend to shy away from anything that has done a few miles. -They like them to have less than 500,000km recorded, but you may have a chance of persuading them to take a 600,000km unit if you can produce a full service history.says Sharp.
Rigid buyers adopt a similar stance towards mileage. "If a 7.5-tonner has done more than 250.000km. they're not interested." •
