A LOSS of £23,205 was incurred by I–% Sunderland Transport Department during the year ended March 31. The annual report of the transport manager, Mr. N. Morton, says that for 13 weeks before higher fares were brought into operation the department was losing £1000 a week.
Another cause of the deficit was the influenza epidemic which reduced traffic and meant increased payments for sickness benefits and overtime, The number of passengers carried fell by 709.000.
