John Stevenson, URTU central and southern organizer, appears to be making something of a reputation as a controversialist. In the April issue of the union journal Wheels he used a phrase in an article "Rebirth of the Trade Unions" which has upset the London embassy of the USSR.
Mr Stevenson wrote: ". . the employers in this country would shake hands with Russia tomorrow if they could, destroy Trade Unionism."
The labour attaché of the Soviet Embassy, Mr Igor Klimor, complained to URTUs general secretary, Mr Jackson Moore—and accompanied his note with various books on Russia and on Soviet trade unionism, with the request that they should be sent to Mr Stevenson "to help him understand about Russia and trade unions, both subjects he knows nothing about".
I can imagine the comments!
