The Government is hoping to end the disparity between top-weight drawbars and artics. In its consultation document on allowing 44 tonnes for combined transport, published last week, the DOT is also proposing to increase the maximum weight for drawbar combinations to 38 tonnes on five or more axles for general haulage. Other changes include: • Six-axled artics and drawbar trailer combinations fitted with roadfriendly suspensions should be allowed to operate at 44 tonnes on journeys to or from rail heads.
• Drivers of such outfits will be required to carry a consignment note showing that cargo had originated from or wos destined for a roil terminal.
• The new limit does not apply to the Channel Tunnel shuttle.
• Maximum dimensions of vehicles will remain unchanged.
• Draft regulations will be circulated this summer and regulations implementing the new vehicle weights will be introduced at the beginning of next year.
