AS useful as is a portable electric drill in normal times, its sphere of operation is much wider to-day. Should an operator be considering the fitting of a gas-producer _plant, or adapting his machines to burn town gas, it is probable that a number al holes will have to be drilled in various chassis components.
It is here that the portable electric drill is practically indispensable. To meet a demand for a low-priced allpurpose tool, Black and Decker, Ltd., Slough, Bucks, has introduced a range of power drills of this type with respective chuck sizes up to in., in. and • in.
The chief, features of the design lie in their robust ,construction and the fact that the chuck speeds are lower than is normal for the maximum size of .drill which can be used.
Each type is provided with a triplereduction gearbox and an armature pinion of large size. Heat-treated nickel-chrome molybdenum steel is employed in these components.
Double-pole automatic-release trigger switches are incorporated arid other features worthy of mention comprise the use of a ball-bearing motor and the employment of taper-roller bearIngs for the main spindle.
These drills have bten designed to meet conditions such as have to be overcome when such tools are used by unskilled operators, the result being that they have considerable overload capacity.
