PAA NEW hydraulically controlled dump truck has been introduced by the Thwaites Engineering Co., Ltd., Cubbington, Leamington Spa, and will be shown for the first time at the Building Exhibition, Olympia, London from November 13-27.
It has been designed for operation with any number of detachable skips, so that the operative does not have to leave his seat or wait for skips to be tilled at turriround points. Up to a ton can be dealt with per cycle.
The standard skip will carry 8 cu. ft. of concrete or 14 Cu. ft. of heaped earth and the machine can operate as a conventional dumper, tipping in the normal manner. Side-discharge concrete-pouring skips of 14-cu.-ft. capacity may also be carried.
Power is supplied by a Petter AVA 2 air-cooled oil engine having electric starting, or by a Petter PH. 1 air-cooled unit with hand-starting. The drive is taken through a four-speed gearbox to a Salisbury hypoid driving axle fitted with single wheels carrying -7.50-20-in. cross-country tyres. Rear steering is used and gives an 18-ft, turning circle. Tyres on the steering wheels are 6.0016 in.
Loading height with the standard skip is 27 in., or 48 in. with the concrete-pouring skip. The overall length of the new machine is 8 ft. 6 in., width 5 ft. 7 in. and height 6 ft. 4 in., whilst the ground clearance is 10 in.
Skips are raised, lowered and tipped by a hydraulically operated cylinder and wire rope controlled by a twoposition hand !ever on the steering column, Skips can be drawn into correct alignment with the carrying cradle by means of the wire rope.
