Respect between a driver and transport manager is crucial in getting the most from drivers. This was the message from Gareth Thomas, LGV driver for DR & FA Ford Transport in Shrewsbury, during the Drivers: Managing your Best Assets seminar.
He also pointed out that a lot of transport managers tend to be former drivers, which has both its pluses and negatives. “Ex-drivers as transport managers [know] what drivers do day-in, day-out; but many would have been on the road in the pre-speed limiter days and when traffic volumes were lower. A transport manager must understand today’s conditions and plan viable routes – if you’ve got a four-hour trip you need extra time built in for eventualities.” Driver Hire agency driver Stuart Searle said agency drivers would benefit from information overload to keep on top of their game.
