William Stobart, chief operating officer at Stobart Group, says: “We believe trampers have a major part to play within our business, even though Eddie Stobart has a wide national network and regional hubs. The trucks driven by tramper drivers may not do as many hours as other vehicles, but the advantage is their flexibility which allows greater opportunities for reloading. This in turn reduces empty running and carbon emissions in line with our environmental policy. Eddie Stobart has day, night and weekend trampers and this structure works well for us in terms of loaded miles and efficiency.”
There’s a bonus to the ‘one man, one truck’ policy for what is probably Britain’s best-known and most-spotted fleet. “We find the drivers take a real pride in what is their home for most of the week, and that shines through in our reputation for clean vehicles and quality customer service. It even improves the residual value of the trucks once we go to sell them on.”
