AROAD users' advisory board which would help the Minister of Transport to "resist the temptation to go in for spectacular politically impressionist schemes," instead of those calculated to benefit the costs of living and production, was advocated on Tuesday by Mr. G. J. Ponsonby, lecturer in commerce at the London School of Economics.
He argued a case for bringing road users into the machinery for deciding road-transport questions, although the Minister should retain the ultimate authority. He should, however, have at his elbow representatives of hauliers, C-licensees, passenger operators and private motorists. Such people really knew at first hand how their costs were affected by traffic congestion.
A board of this kind would provide the valuable " punch " required when big sums of money had to be spent, and the members' advice would aid the statistical inquiries of the Road Research Laboratory. Users' representatives would be keenly interested to see that the right priorities were adopted, and that the money allocated to rods was spent to best advantage.
