• Irish hauliers have challenged a new road survey showing that almost 27% of Irish trucks examined by Gardai in June had at least one bald tyre.
Louth county councillor and haulier Michael O'Donnell says the figures have been exaggerated. According to Jack Farrell, chief executive of the Tyre Industry Council: "In three surveys taken in October, March, and June, 29.5%, 27.1%, and 26.9% of trucks were found to have at least one bald tyre. Some even had six or seven."
Farrell claims the main reason for bald tyres is a lack of awareness of legal tread depth (1.6mm). "Commercial drivers come out time and again as not having looked at their tyres. Bald tyres are a contributing factor in road accidents."
However, O'Donnell points out that there are few accidents involving trucks, taking annual mileage into account.
C 20 fixed infra-red cameras are to be installed on all major roads out of Dublin by Gardai.
