I would like to put the record straight on some inaccurate comments made by The Hawk in a story about the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition (CM July 29).

I would also like to thank him for giving me this opportunity to explain who we really are.

He said Manpower had booked Stand 59, but this was wrong on two counts: 1 — Manpower is not associated with the competition or with driving, only our associate organisation, Overdrive, is involved with driving. The two operations are quite different. Overdrive operates the same way as an employment agency, providing drivers on an ad hoc basis or contract basis to our clients with the driver, in effect becoming the employee of the company he is working for during the assignment.

Manpower, on the other hand, is a work contractor, carrying out all types of commercial, industrial and technical contracts. All Manpower staff are directly employed by Manpower, remain under our ultimate direction and we take responsibility for the work.

2 — Neither Manpower nor Overdrive ever booked a stand at the contest nor ever got beyond the possibility in principle with the organisers. As we had never gone in, I can assure The Hawk that shortage of staff, most definitely, was not the reason for our supposed 'pull out'.

Indeed, we are probably the only company in the country that nearly always has resources to undertake a project, whether for our clients or ourselves.

As for saying we use a computer to match the right person to the right job — meticulous we are, but we have never used computers in this way. Our Overdrive work specification procedures are a good deal more sophisticated than that — as we would be glad to demonstrate to inquirers at any of our 60 Overdrive offices. Manpower, as a work contractor, of course, does not 'match' people to jobs — it carries out work on a contractual basis.

Despite all, I would like to take this opportunity of sincerely wishing CM and all competitors and participants in this year's Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, all the very best on September 11. As sponsors of various entrants in the past and local contributors to some of the regional heats, we know what a worthwhile venture it is.
