BRITAIN'S roads are among th, safest in Europe, according to , survey carried out by the De partment of Transport. Onl. Norway and Sweden have fewe deaths per head of populatioi and per motor vehicle.
The total number of roar deaths in the United Kingdon last year was 6,010, the lowes since 1958, despite a 35 per cen increase in traffic volume.
With the dramatic increase ir oil prices in 1974 came the firs noticeable fall in road deaths Casualities started to rise, but ir 1978-9 they fell again.
Over the last ten years roac accident casualties have faller by 10 per cent. The Departmen. of Transport feels this is due tc safer roads and the increasinc amount of motorways and dual. carriageways being built.
