LAST month Britain was, for the first time, host to the bi-annual Pigeon Olympiad and, as pigeon racing associations turn from sea and rail to road transport, the sport is becoming quite big business for some specialist road operators.
One of the contractors taking birds to dispatch points in numbers of between 5,000 and 8,000 per journey for long-distance events is William Pepper and Co. Ltd., of Rawnsley, Staffs, using four 15-ton articulated outfits supplied by Quicks of Chester Ltd. Taskers drop-frame semi-trailers with bodies by A. W. Holmes Ltd. are coupled to the Thames tractive units. The special compartmented bodies each have a 1.50-gal. water container for supplying the birds during transit to such places as Si. Maio. Rheims and Names.
