What's the score?
Having up to three separate lamp units on either side of the trailer rear, each cluster incorporating side, stop and indicator lamps, is certainly one way to cover yourself against a bulb failure. However. Angus Spooner, Crane Fruehauf's product manager for tippers, says the law only allows two light sources on each side (ie a maximum of two bulbs providing the same function at either side of the rear). Up to two fog lights are permissible if one is fitted, it must be on the centre line or offside of the trailer. Like CM, Spooner can understand why three bulbs aren't allowed because this would give an extra safety margin: "I happen to feel that three would be better." So beware when it comes to speccing extra rear lights or buying a trailer where such lights have been fitted; they might raise eyebrows at a roadside check or annua] test.
