THERE were insufficient tipping 1 vehicles available in the Thirsk area to cope with the transport of large quantities of sand and gravel, particularly, in the sugar-beet season. These vehicles were so difficult to hire that during slack periods they had been kept on at the expense of the applicant's own vehicles.
The Yorkshire Deputy Licensing Authority. Mr. J. H. A. Randolph, was told this at Leeds on Tuesday, when Mr. L. Jackson, a sand and gravel merchant, of Rainton, near Thirsk, applied for a B licence for nine tippers, totalling 32 tons unladen weight, at present tinder C licence. British Railways; Messrs. J. Smith; Messrs. T. E. Nichols and Son: and Messrs. F. D. Todd and Sons, all of Thirsk, appeared as objectors.
Mr. P. Kenny, for the applicant, said that Mr. Jackson was also a director of the Warsill Sand and Gravel Co., Ltd.. and bought the whole of their output in his capacity as a merchant. Mr. Jackson had also been asked to do work for the Agulthorpe and Marfield Quarries. All three were in the Thirsk-Ripon area and their total output often reached 1.200 tons a day.
