AN order for 10 heavy-duty dumpers based on Leyland Super-Hippo EH10B1, 15-ft. 6-in, wheelbase chassis, and 25 tippers based on Leyland Comet ECO2/2L 10-ft. 5-in, wheelbase chassis, has been completed by Telehoist, Ltd., Cheltenham, for the export division of Leyland Motors, Ltd. The vehicles are to be used for a large road-construction project in the Middle East where much of the work will involve long hauls from the rock crusher to roadside dumps. Exceptional stability and speed of tip are said to be given by the link-type tipping gear.
A 70-degree tip and power return of the body are provided by the heavyduty Telelever model HDL7 tipping gear fitted to the SuperrHippos and incorporating twin double-acting rams. Tipping time with a payload of 15 tons is 12 seconds, whilst 10 seconds are required to return the body under power.
The Telehoist dumper-type body is 14 ft. long, 5 ft. wide and has a capacity of 10 cu. yd. Heavy-duty construction is employed to withstand the mechanical loading of rock and other materials, +-in, steel plate being used throughout. The floor consists of a i-in. steel bottom plate Covered with close boarded 1Hn, hardwood and a top sheet of f-in. plate.
At the rear the body floor is taken up at an angle of 20 degrees to form a scow end, the from of the body forming a -robust cab guard.
The Leyland Comet chassis are equipped with the medium Telelever type LKS tipping gear, which incorporates a single-acting ram of large diameter in conjunction with a compact linkage system, Approximately 18 seconds are necessary to tip to the full discharging angle of 50 degrees.
The steel tipping body of 5-cu.-yd. capacity is 10 ft. 6 in. long and 6 ft. 10 in. wide. Constructed throughout of A-in.-steel plate, it embodies a sandwich-type floor with a A-in. top plate. 2-in, hardwood lamination and a a-in. bottom plate. A heavy-duty detachable
cab guard is provided.
Also of plate, the tail-door hangs approximately 4-in, above the' sides, and is fitted with a special tail gate locking mechanism with a concealed locking bar.
