SINCE 1952, the amount of road NJ traffic has increased by 8 per cent. a year, and congestion has grown worse although a greatly increased number of improvement schemes has been carried out during the past two years. This is stated by the Road Research Board in their 1956 report, published last week by the Stationery Office at 5s. 6d., plus 3d. by post.
• No marked improvement in the headlight dazzle problem would he achieved
until more alignment equipment was used in garages. The use of polarized light was being investigated further. Trials of road-surface heating equipment to prevent the formation of ice al danger spots showed that from 1-6 W. of current per sq. ft. would be required.
When restrictions on the loading and unloading of vehicles were brought into effect in parts of Central London. the average capacity of the streets was increased by 170 vehicles an hour.
