I awarded by the Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal to 3,690 Post Office transport maintenance workers and to 178 drivers in the supplies grades. They are some of the 66,634 Post Office workers who have benefited under the Tribunal's award.
The workers claimed an increase of 10 per cent. in existing scales and the Post Office offered a flat advance of 7s. a week for all male grades. The Tribunal have awarded an increase in wages of 8s. a week, back-dated to January 1.
Motor transport labourers, on entry, will receive 129s. a week in the London area and 124s. 6d. in the provinces. Corresponding rates for garage assistants are 132s. 6d. and 128s. In London, rates for mechanics B range from 1315. to 152s., according to age and service, with lower rates in the provinces.
Mechanics A working in London are to be paid wages varying from 138s. to 158s. 6d. Senior mechanics and mechanics-in-charge, Grade III, will receive from 162s. to 173s., mechanicsin-charge, Grade II, a standard rate of I85s., and mechanics-in-charge, Grade 1, 197s.
London drivers will be paid rates ranging from 138s. to 162s. according to the size of vehicle. Provincial drivers will receive 5s. 6d. less.
