PAYLOAD increases of up to 350kg (6.9cwt) are claimed for two new lightweight versions of Ford 7.5-tonne (7.38-ton)gvw D-Series models. Low unladen kerb weights have been achieved by using a lighter chassis frame and front axle and fitting a 59-litre (13gal) fuel tank in place of the usual 85-litre (18.7 gal) one. Other changes include the deletion of the spare wheel and carrier and rear dampers, plus the replacement of the spring parking brake with a single-pull mechanical handbrake.
Compared to the standard chassis 250kg (5cwt) is saved on the D0707 model and when fitted with a 4-310 gearbox instead of the heavier 4-410-S box 350kg (6.9cwt) is knocked off the weight of the D0710.
The lightweight specification vehicles are limited to highway use only. The standard D0707 and D0710 models remain available for operators where payload is less critical. Retail price of the 3.0m (loft) wheelbase D0707 is E3,892.
