• The European Commission has stepped in to end a four-year battle over Cliff's Coaches plan to operate a joint service with German operator Christa Voss.
The Buxton, Derbyshirebased coach operator has finally been given permission to team up with Christa Voss to carry army personnel and their families between London and Lemgo in Germany.
It originally applied authorisation in 1988, k Christa Voss competitors opposed the plans.
The German government had refused to grant authoris ation until the court action had ended.
The Department of Transport urged the European Commission to resolve the dispute under EC Regulation 517/72. It said there was a need for the service because it provided army staff with better security.
