• Scottish Bus Group fares will not be raised in 1972, said Col P. M. Thomas, chairman of the Scottish Transport Group, last week when he announced an STG pretax profit of £5,156,000, compared with a loss of £1.3m in 1970. The Group's bus operation made a 1971 profit of £2.4m as against a near £1m loss in the previous year when a protracted strke affected revenue. To off-set wage increases there was a fares rise last year and again recently.
The chairman also announced that STG, which controls David MacBrayne and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co, had last week approved a £600,000 order for six small drive on-off ferries for delivery during the next 15 months for north-west Scotland services. He could not, however, give a firm assurance that there will be no increase in shipping charges.
