kNSPORT Minister William Rodgers defended the decision of British Road Services to hold its .ual planning conference in Las Palmas in the House of Commons last week. Amid shouts of ghter he told the House: "It is better that they have a weekend in Las Palmas than in, thr .mple, Cardiff."

"I understand the National Freight Corporation agreed that this year's BRS conference should be held in Las Palmas because it was a congenial place to go and good value for money," said Mr Rodgers. Replying to Tory transport spokesman Norman Fowler, who had said that with NFC receiving taxpayers' money it should have been a cheaper meeting, Mr Rodgers commented: "That is a pretty uptight attitude to take on a matter like this."
