ROADS in Northern England and London are the focus of recent lobbying by the British Road Federation in its campaign for more road building.
It has written to MPs in North Yorkshire, calling for more effort to be made to solve traffic problems along the A65 between Leeds and the M6.
It has pointed out that of the eight road schemes planned for the area, only one has any chance of being started before 1987 and three have been suspended indefinitely. The others are planned for starting after 1987 or are in reserve.
BRF director David Gent has told MPs: "The A65 carries a large number of heavy goods vehicles, many of which are generated by local quarries — a bypass could remove 500 heavy goods vehicles a day from the centres of Settle and Giggleswick."
Movement for London, BRF's regional group in the capital, is supporting proposals for the reconstruction of the junction of the A406 North Circular and Al 0 Great Cambridge Roads. This will relieve congestion, it has told a public inquiry.
