Trentham is responsible for laying over 120,000sqm of aircraft apron and taxiways as subcontractor to Taylor Woodrow.
Because the vehicles are used in a continuous work cycle between the batching plant on the airport perimeter and the Barber-Greene concreting train used on the terminal site the Neville Revolver System was chosen in preference to conventional tipper equipment.
The equipment (designed and built by George Neville Truck Equipment) helps to reduce time-consuming reversing manoeuvres when feeding the laying machinery hopper.
The Neville system allows the 9.6cum body to be slewed through 90 degrees to discharge to either side of the vehicle, pulled up alongside the BarberGreene, so that a quicker turn round is achieved. The body, approximately 12ft long, is carried on a power-operated turntable which is rotated by a double-acting hydraulic ram and cable mechanism.
Neville has incorporated Finnish-made under-body tipping gear into the Revolver "package" which also has a poweroperated latch for releasing and securing the top-hung tailgate by remote control from the driving cab.
There is also an automatic locking device to hold the body in the transit position. Unladen weight of the vehicle is 9,450kg. All five vehicles, the first Ford Cargo models to be fitted with the Neville gear, were supplied to Trentham by Bristol Street Motors, of Southampton. Following the successful operation of the vehicles since their introduction at Heathrow the operator has now ordered a sixth unit of a similar design.
